When Tiwa Savage brought the sexy back to music

Between her marriage and birth of her son, the world seems to be distracted with a lot of Tiwa Savage-y things outside her music.

But we haven’t forgotten the Tiwa Savage that stole our hearts when she landed on the scene over five years ago. Before becoming Mavin’s first lady, Tiwa Savage had already stamped her place on the industry as a talented artiste, entertainer and sex icon.

In an industry situated in a conservative society that treats women as objects to be censored, especially at every attempt to embrace their sensuality, Tiwa Savage broke expectations by glazing her artistry with bright colourful music videos, a brazen allure and a coquettish public image that kept her business out of the media.

Kele Kele Love channelled Tiwa’s inner Rude Boy era Rihanna to sing about an affair she didn’t want unless her partner was willing to fully commit to her.

On Love Me X3, Savage finally catches the love bug. She struts her glistening daintily clad brown skin throughout the video as she dances, bumps and grinds a sturdy-looking male vixen. She takes the high-fashion route on Without My Heart with a class act song produced by Oak (producer of Nicki Minaj’s Your Love). As her last release as an independent artiste, Tiwa savage went all out with an accompanying Victorian era video. The fashion is high, the setting is picturesque and she is sexier than we have ever seen her.

Over the years, Tiwa Savage has celebrated the female form on an exuberant level her industry peers had mostly shied away from, for fear of public backlash. Though she has returned to a more subtle artistry as part of the maturity of her sound, music and style, her run as one of Nigeria’s most sought after sex icons was established in the early years of her career.

As a legacy, Tiwa opened the doors for other artistes like Seyi Shay and Yemi Alade to openly embrace their feminity and sex appeal as a part of their brands.
