A Storm is coming!

StormrexSinger, Songwriter and Vocalist StormRex has brought a breath of fresh air to the Nigerian music landscape, in an industry where everybody seems to be going pop, this high life artiste has brought a distinct sound to the industry with her unique voice and breathtaking ‘Igbo’ delivered hooks, even if you don’t understand a word of the language, the music beneath her voice takes control of you.

You would be right to assume that she is a newbie maybe after recently seeing her feature on Reminisce’s Local Rappers and MI’s Bullion Van but she has been around a while, a long while actually, I remember first hearing about her music some three years back when the ‘042’ movement was in full swing, riding off the back of her early singles like ‘Who get that thing’ with her girl group to gain radio ubiquity in the east. Her spread was however limited because whilst she was fast becoming a household name in the east, mainstream cities were yet to feel the wave of her storm.

Ogbobu Yvonne, a graduate of Bio-Chemistry from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology besides studying, was a former member of the female group called ‘Desperate Chics’ before deciding to go solo. In 2010, she dropped her debut album under her indie imprint titled ‘The New Storm’ and despite the album having some really good songs like Kerenke which featured Flavour and Oringo, it wasn’t much of a success as it didn’t quite get the right push. In 2014, she dropped her second album titled Freedom, the 11 track album released under Afro Gold Ent. features the likes of Timaya and Iyanya and boast of heavy tunes like Kerenke remix, I Like am, Weather and Sugar girl. This album got her more attention as people began to see the clouds of a new star gathering.

Forward 2015, now signed to PentHauze Records, she has been blessing our airwaves with new singles and features in anticipation of a new album that should seal her place as one of the majors in the industry, releasing songs like ‘Blessings’, ‘Walk with me’ ft Olamide, laying her vocals on Phyno’s ‘Nnunu’, ‘Carry Me go’ off the 2kings album and also doing a soundtrack for Clarence Peters debut movie ‘Hex’.

The very pretty Enugu artiste has paid her dues in the game and with the backing of the new label seems on the right track to take over not just the East but the whole of the country as she continues to prove that she is the real deal. This may just be her year as a storm is definitely brewing.
